IDC Herzliya Dedicates the Zevulun Hammer Auditorium

The Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya (IDC) honored one of Israel's greatest education leaders, on November 20th, by dedicating the Zevulun Hammer auditorium on campus. Hammer, who passed away in 1998, served as Israel's Education & Culture Minister for more than 10 years. Hammer's family and friends were joined by some of his closest colleagues including Rabbi Israeli Meir Lau, MK Zevulun Orlev, Former Minister Shaul Yahalom, Dr. Yakov Weinroth and former Herzliya Mayor, Eli Landau.

Professor Uriel Reichman, founder of the Interdisciplinary Center said IDC owes Hammer a "debt of honor" which is why his institution is honoring him in such a fashion. Reichman told of how at the time when he fought to get IDC recognized as an academic institution, it was Hammer's decisiveness which allowed for accredited B.A. studies to go ahead. Reichman was especially impressed with Hammer's decision considering the ideological differences between them. "IDC Herzliya aims to help Israel and the Jewish nation. This is a Zionist institution and that's where Zevulun Hammer and his deep commitment to the state and the Jewish people came in." Reichman said.

Rabbi Lau, called Hammer's modesty his "calling card" and his most dominant trait. "When we talk about the National-Religious movement, Zevulun was the hyphen that connected the two" Lau stated.

Hammer's daughter, Kinneret, told the audience that her father had great respect for his fellow man and how, every day, he would write down requests he had received from different people on little of pieces of paper.

Dr. Yakov Weinroth spoke of the Zevulun Hammer he got to know over the years. "Zevulun lead the religious community from the margins of society into the mainstream but despite that, he wasn't a revolutionary and that is to his credit. Zevulun took everything one step at a time, his small deeds led to a large revolution."
